My Anton Zeilinger Story

Today, the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2022 was announced. The prize was awarded to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science.” The award was long overdue.

On 13 June this year, I casually walked into a lecture hall after lunch. I walked in because I saw some activity outside the hall. I saw Prof. Zeilinger lecturing there. I sat there for the rest of his lecture. His lecture was part of the Wolf Prize lectures. I didn't understand a word, but his enthusiasm was remarkable. I knew that I was watching a future Nobel laureate. At some point during the lecture, when asked why he did something the way he did, he said that he was a curious man.

Sunset

I had never watched a sunset at the beach before today. I was planning to watch the sun go down over water for quite sometime. I went to watch a sunset on 30 June but we left for the beach quite late and missed it.

Today was the day, the evening of 2 July 2022, when I stood by the Mediterranean in Haifa and watched my first sunset at the beach.

It was soothing. I never ever imagined that one day I will be watching the sun go down over Mediterranean. I never imagined the things that happened to me over the last seven years.

I remember something from Kafka on the Shore by Murakami.

"And once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm's all about.”

I am not sure whether the storm is really over but certainly there is a lull before the next storm. Life, anyways, is all about moving from one storm to the next. I hope the next storm won't be as long as the last one ( 13 August 2015 to 9 April 2022).
